What is cold?

Constriction in the throat which obstructs normal breathing.

Causes

Consumption of cold or sour food by people with sensitive throats, phlegm, certain allergies, sudden change in temperature.

Symptoms

Frequent need to clear irritation in throat or phlegm in the chest by forceful and noisy exittance of air through the mouth.

Remedy (Nuskhe)

  • To stay away from cough of all kinds, boil some fresh basil (tulsi) leaves in 2 cups water.  Continue to boil till reduced to 1 cup.  Drink this water every morning.
  • The high pectin content of apples relieves cough and helps in eliminating toxins from the body.  A minimum of 300-350 gms of apples or their juice should be consumed daily for 8-10 days for beneficial results.
  • Mix 1 teaspoon of honey with ½ teaspoon ground liquorice (muleti) and take it twice a day for any type of cough.
  • For night coughs, mix 1 teaspoon honey in a cup of hot drink (milk or tea) before bed time.
  • Drink turmeric (haldi) powder boiled in milk at bed time.  Boil 1 cup milk.  After the boil, reduce the heat and add ½ teaspoon haldi powder.  Keep on low heat for 2 minutes.  Remove from fire.
  • If there is a lot of mucus (balgam) with cough, take 10 peppercorns (sabut kali mirch), 4 small sticks of liquorice (mulethi) and 2 teaspoons of sugar candy (mishri); pound together to a fine powder and have ¼ teaspoon four times a day.
  • Consume a mix of ½ teaspoon carom seeds (ajwain) with ½ teaspoon honey and 1 crushed peppercorn (sabut kali mirch).
  • Powder 1 clove (laung).  Add a pinch of sugar and 1 teaspoon honey.  Let the child lick it little by little.
  • Mix equal amounts of honey and ginger (adrak) juice.  For better results warm the mixture a little and then have it.  Have 1 teaspoon, 2-3-4 times a day.
  • Three peppercorns (sabut kali mirch) with a pinch of black cumin (shah jeera) and a pinch of salt gives relief.
  • Mix 1 teaspoon pepper powder with 4 teaspoon jiggery (gur).  Make small balls.  Such 3-4 balls/tablets during the day.
  • Give 1 teaspoon of basil (tulsi) leaves juice, 2-3 times a day to children having cough.  Tulsi leaves can be crushed to a paste and the paste squeezed through a clean muslin cloth to get juice.
  • Heat ½ cup of mustard oil (sarson ka tel).  add 5 flakes of garlic (lasan) and let it turn black.  Take it off the fire and let it cool.  Bottle it and use it to massage nose, head and chest.
  • Keep 5 whole peppercorns (sabut kali mirch) in your mouth before sleeping.  Do not crush.  You will sleep undisturbed.  Crush and swallow in the morning.
  • Grind tulsi leaves and 1" piece ginger.  Extract juice.  Mix with 6 tablespoon honey.  Take 1 teaspoon of this three times a day for a few days.

Cough (DRY)

  • Mix 8-10 tablespoons of coconut milk with 1 tablespoon poppy seeds (khus khus) and 1 tablespoon pure honey.  Take every night before going to bed.

Cough with phlegm (balgam)

  • Mix equal amounts of onion juice and honey.  Have 1 teaspoon, 3-4 times a day.  This is a preventive medicine against cold in winter.
  • Lemon juice has the property of dislodging phlegm.  It's consumption pulls out the phlegm and cures cough.
  • Take 8-10 tulsi leaves and wash well.  To 1 cup of water, add these tulsi leaves, 1-2 cloves of garlic (lasan), ½" piece ginger, crushed, and 4-5 peppercorns (sabut kali mirch).  Boil the water and keep simmering on fire till the quantity is reduced to ¼ cup.  Cool.  Strain.  Add 1 teaspoon honey.  Drink this every morning.
Crush ¼ cup of carom seeds (ajwain) and tie in a thin muslin cloth (malmal) and place it near the child's pillow.
