High Blood Pressure
Blood Pressure - High

What is high blood pressure?

High blood pressure or hypertension means high pressure (tension) in the arteries.  The arteries carry blood from the pumping heart to all the tissues and organs of the body.  Blood pressure is considered normal when the machine reads below 120/80.  When it reads 140/90 or more, it is considered to be high blood pressure.

Causes

Too much salt intake, stress, genetic pool, hyperactive lifestyles are known to cause high BP.  High BP leads to major health problems like heart attacks, kidney failures, strokes, and vision impairment.

Symptoms

The symptoms of high blood pressure are weakness, restlessness, sleeplessness, headache, dizziness, vertigo, easy fatigue, frequent blushing accompanied by rumbling of the bowels, palpitation of the heart, sweating, nausea, and blurred vision.  Sometimes there are no symptoms, that is why it is called a silent killer.  Regular checkups are very important.

  • Restrict salt intake and drink plenty of fluids (at least 8-10 glasses of water daily).
  • Have a single pod garlic (lasan), one pod first thing every morning or if this is not available, have 1-2 cloves of ordinary garlic (lasan).  If you get discomfort with having garlic first thing in the morning, swallow 2 cloves twice a day with water, any time or with meals.
  • Mix 1 teaspoon honey, 1 teaspoon ginger (adrak) juice and 1 teaspoon cumin (jeera) powder.  Have twice a day.
  • Drink curry leaves (curry patta) juice 3 times a day (1 glassful) for 1-2 months and then reduce to only once in the morning.  Have it on empty stomach.  For taking out juice, fill you mixer with washed curry leaves.  Add ½ - 1/3 glass water.  Churn well and sieve.  Add ½ - 1 lemon juice and drink fresh.  This is one of the most effective remedies for lowering BP.
  • Drink coriander (dhania) juice made from fresh dhania 3 times a day.
  • High blood-pressure can be cured by the daily intake of ¼ tsp pepper powder mixed with ¼ cup curd, first thing in the morning on an empty stomach for 48 days.
  • Boil 1 cup leaves of drumsticks (sahijan) in about 2 glasses of water till the leaves are soft.  Strain and cool.  Drink the water on an empty stomach in the morning.
  • Have a ripe papaya every day on an empty stomach and do not eat anything for 2 hours after that.
  • People suffering from high BP are advised to go on an apple diet for a few days.
  • Have 1 cup of butter milk, to which 1 teaspoon of lemon juice has been added, as frequently as possible to bring down your BP.  Watermelon is high in potassium but very low in sodium and hence helps in lowering BP.  Eat as much as possible.

Banish BP:  6-3-6 Tension Formula

Try the 6-3-6 formula for instant relaxation when you are tense or anxious.  Slowly inhale to the count of 6 and hold your breath for a count of 3 and then exhale to the count of 6.  This type of rhythmic breathing can control stress.
