Flatulence, Gas Problems
Flatulence, Gas Problems

What is flatulence/gas?

The pressure of a mixture of gases known as flatus in the digestive tract.  These are expelled from the rectum.

Causes

  • Incomplete digestion.
  • Eating foods high in certain polysaccharides.  These include beans, lentils, milk, onions, radish, sweet potatoes, cheese, cashews and cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli.

Symptoms

Abdominal pain, bloating and belching (dakaar).

Remedy (Nuskhe)

  • Mix 1 teaspoon dhania powder with ¼ teaspoon mitha soda, ¼ salt or ¼ teaspoon ajwain.  Take twice daily.
  • Chew slightly and swallow 2 flakes of garlic after meals along with a deseeded munakka.  Very soon all the gas will be out.
  • Eat 1 teaspoon coriander (dhania) powder (grind dhania seeds at home) with water after meals for a few days.
  • Mix ¼ teaspoon dry ginger powder (saunth) with a pinch of asafetida (hing) and a pinch of black salt (kala namak) in a little warm water and drink it.
  • Mix 1-2 teaspoons brandy with warm water and drink for immediate relief from gas and stomach ache due to gas.
  • Powder together dry ginger (saunth) with black pepper (kali mirch), equal amounts, say 1 teaspoon each along with 3-4 cardamom (chhoti ilaichi) seeds.  Have ½ teaspoon of this mixed with water to relieve gas.
  • Apply a paste of asafetida (hing) mixed with water on the stomach.
  • Make a course powder (churan) of equal amounts of cumin seeds (jeera), carom seeds (ajwain), black peppercorns (sabut kali mirch) and fenugreek seeds (methi daana).  Have ½ teaspoon with water.
  • To prevent gas from forming, chew a piece of fresh ginger after meals, regularly.

Golden rules for suffering patients

  • Avoid heavy (fried), spicy food.  Do not eat very large meals, instead eat small meals every 2 hours.
  • Do some exercise.  Even a walk will do wonders.
