CYPRESS (CUPRESSUS SEMPERVIRENS)

Effects: Refreshing.

Aroma: Middle/base note.

This is a tall evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean regions. It is now cultivated in France, Spain, and Morocco. It was used as a natural remedy by many of the ancient civilizations.

Properties: 

  • Astringent.
  • Antispasmodic .
  • Diuretic.
  • Expectorant.

Contra-indications: 
Due to its effect on the menstrual cycle, cypress should be avoided in pregnancy.

Extraction:
Steam distillation of both the needles and twigs.

Uses:

  • Rheumatism.
  • Muscle and nervous tension.
  • Haemorrhoids.
  • Spasmodic coughs.

Cypress is helpful as a massage oil to treat rheumatic aches and pains as well as swollen joints.

Used as an inhalant, its antispasmodic properties help alleviate coughs, bronchitis, asthma and sore throats.

Cypress is very helpful for regulating the menstrual cycle and treating oedema. It also has a beneficial effect on menopause symptoms such as hot flushes and irritability.

It can be used in treating oily skin and hair.
