This tall evergreen is found extensively in Scandinavia, the former Soviet Union and Europe. There are many species of pine but the needles of the Scotch Pine are considered to produce the best oil.
Properties:
- Antiseptic.
- Expectorant.
- Tonic.
Contra-indications:
May cause irritation to sensitive skin.
Extraction:
Steam distillation of the needles.
Uses:
- Respiratory tract infections.
- Flu.
- Sinusitis.
- Rheumatism.
- Gout.
Pine is also useful as a disinfectant.
It is ideal as an inhalation for the treatment of respiratory problems such as bronchitis and laryngitis.
As a massage oil, use diluted to ease aches and pain such as gout and rheumatism. It can also be used as a compress in these conditions.
