            This shrub originated in Algeria, Madagascar and Guinea. There are hundreds of different species of the Geranium family. It has a colourful flower in varying shades of pink and is a familiar sight in window boxes, particularly in the Mediterranean regions.
            Properties: 
            
              - Antiseptic.
               
              - Antifungal.
               
              - Anti-spasmodic.
               
              - Diuretic.
 
            
            Contra-indications:
              Geranium oil may irritate sensitive skins. It is best avoided during pregnancy.
              
              Extraction:
              Steam distillation of the flowers, stalks and leaves.
            Uses:
            
              - Neuralgia.
               
              - Tonsillitis.
               
              - Inflammation of the breasts. 
               
              - Slow circulation.
               
              - Burns.
               
              - Oedema of the legs.
               
              - Rheumatism. 
               
            
            Geranium is also helpful in dealing with PMT and menopause symptoms. Its diuretic properties make geranium useful for helping with fluid retention.
            Used in massage or inhalations, geranium has a beneficial effect on nervous tension and depression. Massaging with the diluted oil also helps poor circulation. It has a soothing effect on inflamed tissue and can ease swollen legs and oedema. Its astringent quality makes geranium ideal as a skin tonic and conditions such as burns and eczema may respond well to it.
